Creating Integrated Collections for an Integrated Experience.
Luum creates styles and collections designed to work together to form a Unified Field.
We work by hand at the fiber level to understand – and ultimately influence – how our materials will perform in the built environment.
In 2021, Luum proudly launched Grid State and Ecotone: the contract industry’s first and second recycled, biodegradable* polyester textiles.
These styles advance the conversation around sustainability, lessen impact on the environment and provide more design solutions with their bleach-cleanable and multipurpose-use properties.
Recycled polyester fibers are enhanced with a bio-catalyst additive at the molecular level, accelerating the polyester’s ability to biodegrade in anaerobic environments. When the product reaches landfill, the additive attracts microorganisms and breaks down the polymer chains. After approximately 3.5 years, biodegradation is complete and only naturally occurring elements remain.
*Rate and extent of biodegradation into elements found in nature is 91% after 1,278 days under ASTM D5511 (Anaerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials Under High Solids Anaerobic Digestion Conditions.) The test was done with the same component (PET) polyester and biocatalyst additive. No evidence of further degradation.
According to the EPA, in the US alone, 55 million pounds of synthetic textiles are sent to the landfill every day. Luum is proud to be part of the solution.
Grid State, Multipurpose Textile
From the Collective Conscious Collection
Grid State is all about evolution. Not only does its recycled, biodegradable fiber content lessen impact on the environment but it also provides more design solutions with its bleach-cleanable and multipurpose-use properties.
Ecotone, Multipurpose Textile
From the Rare Earth Collection
Ecotone is the second recycled, biodegradable polyester textile in the Luum line, providing more design solutions with its bleach-cleanable and multipurpose-use properties. Ecotone’s delustered, solution dyed fibers give its surface a wool-like quality while its color range - dually influenced by nature’s palette and the synthetic brights seen in active wear - demonstrates a range of options for use on screens, panels, wrapped walls and upholstery alike.
